CHRONICLE OFFICES BOMBED! PAPER CLOSES

Special edition
The Chronicle’s offices were hit by bombs on the night of September 17, 1940 after more than 250 German bombers flew in to bombard central London with high explosives and incendiaries. The John Lewis department store on Oxford Street was also badly hit in the attack and practically burned to the ground. Merseyside was also bombed. Here at the Chronicle there were no casualties as all staff had gone down to the shelters before the bombardment began. However, the building was badly damaged and sadly Spofforth the office cat is missing.
It is with great regret, therefore, that I report that The Chronicle is unable to continue reporting on the Battle of Britain, and other events, until we have found suitable new premises.
I hope that you, our readers, have found The Chronicle informative over the past few months that we have been bringing you daily news of Britain at war; news of mighty challenges and the even greater courage required to confront them. In particular we salute the members of the RAF who have been fighting to save Britain from the Nazi menace. But it is also the radar plotters, factory-workers, lorry-drivers, firemen, nurses, doctors and even the farmers, who have all worked so hard, who merit our thanks. We have made it this far together; through our collective efforts, I am certain we will win the Battle of Britain,
As you know we have been supporting the RAF Benevolent Fund in their work to provide practical help to the pilots, their families and other members of the RAF who have been injured or killed in the line of duty.
You can help them too.
Please donate what you can to help the RAFBF with their excellent work.
Join with us in saluting the valiant members of past and present members of the RAF by leaving a message of thanks here with the Chronicle.
And please visit the RAFBF on some newfangled thing called Facebook.
PM makes RAFBF appeal

The Prime Minister Winston Churchill has made his own appeal to members of the public to donate to the RAF Benevolent Fund.
‘Let us all welcome this chance to pay a small measure of the debt we owe,’ he said, reminding us of his own words about the pilots of the RAF that ‘Never in the field of human conflict, was so much owed by so many to so few’.
