More successful raids by the RAF on Italian stores, barracks and shipping in the Italian colonies of Eritrea and Libya have taken place in the last few days, according to a communiqué issued in Cairo which said:

‘A formation of our bombers raided stores and barracks south of Assab (Eritrea). Fires were started which could be seen for thirty miles.

‘Shipping in Tobruk harbour (Libya) was again attacked by our bombers. The full results are not yet known, but a column of black smoke was observed on the south shore after one attack.

‘All our aircraft returned safely.

‘The enemy attempted two night raids on Malta, and one yesterday morning. None of the raids were successful and there was no damage and no casualties.

‘It is now confirmed that after the enemy attack on Wajir (Kenya) on July 11, one enemy fighter was shot down by anti-aircraft fire, the aircraft crashing at Derkall. The crew of three were dead.

‘In the same engagement, another fighter, after being attacked by two fighters of the South African Air Force, made off with one engine smoking badly.’

WORLD’S TALLEST MAN DIES

07_15_chronicle_sub

Robert Wadlow, who, with a height of 8ft 11 inches (2.72m), was the tallest man in the world, has died of a blood infection in his sleep, aged 22 years-old. At the time of his death he was still growing. Medical experts say that his remarkable height was caused by hypertrophy of the pituitary gland.

He weighed a little less than 9lb at birth but at 18 months weighed 4st 6lb and by the age of 10 he was already 6ft 6 inches tall. He won a college scholarship, studied law and was a freemason. He was well known across America partly because of numerous appearances in a nationwide tour with the Ringling Brothers Circus. He had four normal-sized brothers and sisters.
